TÜV Rheinland Provides Support in Identifying NIAS in Food Contact Materials

With increased awareness of NIAS (Non Intentionally Added Substances) among various regulatory bodies, we are starting to see a trend. Since 2020, various German office of health and food safety are asking retailers about NIAS-related information regarding their food contact materials and they are more aware of the necessity and importance of NIAS compliance.

The EU Plastics Regulation (Commission Regulation EU No. 10/2011) states that a manufacturer or business operator must also assess impurities, as well as reaction and degradation products, in accordance with internationally recognized scientific principles of risk assessment. And the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) also takes NIAS into consideration in some of the recent additions of approved substances in EU No. 10/2011.

The challenge for the NIAS screening is to measure and detect all possible NIAS present that can potentially endanger human health. TÜV Rheinland Hong Kong can provide NIAS screening, including toxicological assessments on the detected substances. Moreover, the Hong Kong office has one of the highest capabilities in FCM testing within the TÜV Rheinland Group, fulfilling traditional FCM testing requirements of 40+ countries in one single location. We have developed an NIAS screening method for food contact materials, with an investment in ultra performance liquid chromatography, coupled with quadruple time-of-flight mass spectrometry (UPLC-Q-TOF-MS). The UPLC-Q-TOF methodology is a powerful qualitative analysis tool applied to the identification of trace amounts of chemicals.

For all customers engaged in businesses related to FCMs (packaging, kitchen and tableware, household appliances, food production machinery, etc.), ranging from retailers to raw material manufacturers, we can help and offer suggestions. In view of our global capability in FCM regulation testing, we can offer tailor-made FCM protocol support, DoC, GMP, and NIAS screening services.
