Embracing TNFD & SBTN: Nature – The Next Frontier in ESG Strategy

Nature is the Next ESG Imperative

Over half of the world’s GDP heavily relies on nature and the services it provides. Yet biodiversity loss and ecosystem degradation pose growing risks to businesses – from disrupted supply chains to resource scarcity. Investors and regulators are increasingly paying attention. Around the world (including Hong Kong and Asia), we see a rapidly rising demand for corporate disclosure on nature-related issues. In response, new frameworks like the Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures (TNFD) and the Science Based Targets Network (SBTN) have emerged to help companies integrate nature into their ESG risk management and sustainability goals. Below, we introduce what TNFD and SBTN are, why they matter, and how companies can get ahead of this nature-focused sustainability wave.

What is TNFD and Why It Matters?

Integrating nature into risk management and reporting. The Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures (TNFD) is a global, market-led initiative launched in 2021 to develop a risk management and disclosure framework for nature-related issues. Modelled after the climate-focused TCFD, the TNFD framework encourages organizations to assess and report on their dependencies and impacts on nature – as well as the related risks and opportunities – across governance, strategy, risk management, and metrics/targets. In practice, this means companies are urged to evaluate how factors like biodiversity loss, ecosystem degradation, and resource scarcity could affect their operations and financial performance, and to disclose these findings in a structured way. The goal is not only better risk management but also to shift financial flows away from nature-negative outcomes. Crucially, investors are watching: a recent survey found 63% of companies view nature-related issues as equally or more significant than climate issues to their future prospects, and over three-quarters of investors want clearer nature-related disclosure standards building on TNFD. In short, TNFD helps meet growing investor expectations by bringing nature considerations into core business and financial decision-making.

What is SBTN and Why It Matters?

Setting science-based targets for nature. The Science Based Targets Network (SBTN) is a global collaboration launched in 2019 (as part of the Global Commons Alliance) to extend the success of science-based climate targets into the realm of nature. SBTN provides guidance for companies (and cities) to set science-based targets across key domains of nature – including freshwater use, land use, biodiversity, and ocean health. In essence, it offers a framework for assessing your organization’s impacts and dependencies on nature and then developing measurable, time-bound goals to reduce negative impacts and restore ecosystems in line with what science says is necessary. By setting targets with SBTN, companies can align their strategies with global goals like the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework and ensure their actions are quantifiable and credible. This not only helps safeguard natural resources critical to the business, but also demonstrates to stakeholders and investors that the company is proactively managing nature-related risks and opportunities. SBTN’s methods complement disclosure frameworks – for example, progress on SBTN targets can feed into reports aligned with GRI, CDP, or TNFD. Momentum is building here as well: as of early 2024, around 160 companies worldwide were already preparing to set science-based nature targets through SBTN’s programs, a number expected to grow as concerns about water scarcity, deforestation, and biodiversity loss accelerate.

The Momentum: Investors and Regulators Focus on Nature

Nature-related disclosure and target-setting are no longer niche topics – they are quickly moving into the mainstream of ESG. Some key signs of momentum:

  • Global adoption is rising: In just two years since the TNFD framework was introduced, over 620 organizations from 50+ countries (representing US$20 trillion in assets) have publicly committed to start TNFD-aligned reporting. Early adopters include financial institutions and corporates across Asia and globally, signaling broad interest in managing nature risks.
  • Standards are converging: Major sustainability reporting standards are incorporating nature. The TNFD recommendations align with and have been integrated into frameworks like the GRI standards, the EU’s Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD), and the new ISSB sustainability disclosure standards. In other words, whether you report in Hong Kong or elsewhere, nature metrics and disclosures are increasingly expected.
  • Investor expectations are growing: Investors recognize that “business resilience depends on nature’s resilience”. In a 2025 survey, 77% of investors said they want specific nature-related reporting standards built on the TNFD framework. Major investor coalitions (like the Finance for Biodiversity Pledge with 160+ financial institutions) have formed to push for biodiversity protection. The message is clear – capital is starting to flow toward nature-positive companies, and those lagging on nature issues risk losing investor confidence.

In summary, companies that proactively address nature impacts and dependencies are better positioned to meet emerging regulations and investor demands. By using frameworks like TNFD and SBTN, businesses can stay ahead of the curve, building resilience and trust in an era of nature-focused ESG.
